A question and answer session with V G Lee :

How do you see your own act or the work?

My life both personal and professional seems to encourage the ridiculous – as a writer of comic fiction and a comedian, my art and my life are inextricably linked!

How would you describe your own practice?

I work on several projects – devoting weeks/months to each, leaving then returning to them.  My forthcoming novel Always You, Edina was written in tandem to short stories & 2 work-in-progress novels.

Are there any external factors that help you creatively?

Both my friends and my enemies are equally important in providing inspiration as my work is often character driven.

How do you look at reinventing yourself or reflect progression in your work?

I avoid too much time in my comfort zone. Taking up stand-up comedy at sixty has helped develop my performance skills and also refreshed my writing.

What are the most important themes and elements that feed into your creativity?

My themes are the ‘plight of the underdog’ and finding good within bad and vice versa. Credible dialogue is an abiding absorption!

Can you describe the creative process behind the work and how it works for you?

A conversation or incident will affect me and I’ll write it down. Over time I’ll add to the writing. Maybe years later I’ll realise I have inadvertently made a start on a new project.

How would you like yourself or your work to be known?

As very funny and surprisingly compassionate.

Any single wish?

That the jolly building blocks of characters and situations continue to present themselves to me!

Thank you V G Lee and best wishes from GFEST team.
