A very quick chat with Valera:

Valera Eremenko

What are you doing right now?

I am currently directing a six part history documentary/drama for the BBC.

How do you see your own work?

I am filmmaker and TV director. I write my own scripts.

How relevant is your work or practice today to be a part of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) or queer art work?

I wanted to make a film that highlighted the coming out process in a different way. For me, coming out in post-soviet Russia – was not a particularly dramatic experience. I felt there are so many films about the trauma of coming out – this film cuts the whole process of coming out to one question.

Tell us more about the process:

This is clearly a film with a gay message – I wanted to share my work with an audience who would perhaps have an empathy to a gay coming out film.

Do you see yourself as ‘gay or queer artist’ and What do you think about the art Vs. sexuality debate?

No, I do not see myself as a gay artist as such. I am a director who happens to be gay. There is no debate between art v sexuality. To quote Oscar Wilde, “All art is at once surface and symbol – Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril”.

How do you fund your practice?

Self-funded – but I saw this film as an investment in my future. I hope my next film will not be self-funded!

A single wish ?

That this film is enjoyed by the audience and makes people think a little about the message.

Thank you Valera and best wishes from GFEST
