A profile: Maitree Siriboon

I work as a curator for Whitespace gallery in Bangkok and I devote much of the remaining time to my own artistic pursuits. My work is a storyboard where I transplant my life experiences, and I hope it will pave my way to a fulfilling masterpiece before my time is up.

Thailand has a rather special pattern of gender roles and their impact on social life. This situation has affected my day-to-day realities and I believe it holds broad interest.

My work is inspired by Isan, the place where I’m from and also the place where most sex workers in Thailand are from. And I believe there are important lessons to be learned by international viewers from the unique fate of this region.

I see a part of myself as a gay artist, but I believe my work is broader than that. My art does catch gay eyes very often, but I cannot promise what my work of tomorrow will look like.

I see my self as a struggling artist  so all the support comes from friends, art lovers, galleries, collectors and other people who appreciate what I do. I work through my connections in the art world to get the  work out there.

I would prefer to be known as a buffalo boy who can never get back to ride a buffalo.

Art can convey messages that are very difficult to put forth in words. Perhaps gay art will help the gay world to understand itself and to be understood by others more deeply.

My single wish is I see myself clearly, even if the world is too confusing, to see it clearly.

Thank you Maitree and best wishes from GFEST.

Now in its fourth year, GFEST is supported by the Mayor of London, dignitaries, Ministers and MPs from all the leading parties, various London boroughs and Arts Council England.
